When a report came out earlier this week regarding Fiat’s intentions for Chrysler (making it a Cadillac competitor), Dodge (focusing on driving dynamics) and Jeep (being, well, Jeep), one semi-iconic nameplate was left out of the discussion: Ram.

Toiling away under the Dodge brand, the Ram moniker has been reserved for Chrysler Co.’s truck offerings. However, a new initiative could promote the Ram as a standalone brand, focusing exclusively on vans, SUVs, commercial vehicles, and, of course, pickups. That would free Dodge from rough-and-tumble heavy-duty products, leaving it to fend for itself in the compact, mid-size and performance segments - although it’s destined to receive some help from Alfa Romeo in the form of joint product development.

Unfortunately for Europe, Dodge - which was just recently introduced across the pond in 2006 - won’t benefit from the reworked branding and products. According to InsideLine, Chrysler Group’s European arm is likely to drop Dodge abroad in the future. So get your Avenger, Caliber, Journey or Nitro while you can… if you must.

Seat wants to make sure that people in the U.K. don’t equate a family car with being boring, and what better more Latin way to do it than by using happy naked people? The print campaign for the Seat Altea features two “parents” hopping out of their Seat and frolicking on their way to a skinny dipping session. This kind of behavior is apparently called “Seattitude,” and you’ll be brimming with it if you own an Altea (Spanish models not included).

It’s hard to believe, but cab drivers in New York City are prohibited by law from talking on cell phones, with or without headsets. That doesn’t seem to stop them, says the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. Citing phone-related accident statistics, the commission is now proposing more stringent rules that would raise fines and even keep cabbies from using hands-free devices to chat. “We’ve tried everything else; there’s no other way we can make this work,” says Matthew W. Daus, the taxi commissioner.

In the first six months of 2009, only one ticket was issued for every 500,000 cab rides. Cabbies escape prosecution because they claim they were only wearing the hands-free devices, not using them. “Judges have been dismissing summonses because there’s no proof of conversation,” says Daus. Under the proposed rules, the wearing of a headset merits an infraction. Under the current rules, cab drivers are allowed to talk on cell phones while stopped at a red light. The new rules would require drivers to pull over to answer the phone.

Without a doubt, the cabbies are riled. Calling the proposed rules inhumane, they claim mobile phones are crucial in emergencies and the only way they are able to keep in touch with relatives during their 12-hour shifts. While the drafted rules are subject to public hearings next month, the drivers point out the absurdity of some of the proposals. When one organizer at the New York Taxi Workers Alliance was told that he’d have to pull over to answer a ringing phone, his amusing answer was rather succinct: “Where do you get space to put your car?”

This past September, Trust Co. LTD - the parent company of GReddy Performance Products in the U.S. - declared the Japanese equivalent of Chapter 11. According to a release from the aftermarket parts supplier, Trust has successfully completed the reorganization process (known in Japan as Minji-Saisei-Hou) and is hoping to be completely back on its feet within the next few months. During the reorganization, both Trust and GReddy have maintained its workforce here and abroad, developed new components, continued to produce parts and serviced its clients around the world. While we’re happy to hear about GReddy’s future involvement in the aftermarket, this won’t be the first or last filing from a performance part supplier as the auto-apocalypse continues.

When most people think of Lotus, a few different thoughts tend to enter their head. One is of little teeny Toyota-powered Elise/Exige track toys buzzing around a racetrack. Another is of an underwater submarine piloted by none other than James Bond (albeit Roger Moore). And then — maybe — some of you might think of the racing success Lotus used to enjoy, back in the day, a long time ago. Well, according to Autocar, Lotus’ new CEO Dany Bahar is seeking to change all that.

“Lotus was mentioned in the same sentence as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati in the 1970s-1990s,” said Bahar. “Then, it got closed into a corner. We believe it’s the right time to bring Lotus back to where it was.” Not only that, but Proton Group (they own Lotus) managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir (must make for one hell of a business card) says that the new Evora, Lotus’s first new car since 1995, is “a turning point.”

Bahar is making returning Lotus to a place of prestige a top priority for the Malaysian-owned company. The ex-Ferrari exec claims to have have a business plan to return Lotus to the same plane of existence as Ferrari within five years. Of course, to accomplish this, the Camry-powered Evora just ain’t going to cut it. Which more or less guarantees the return of the Esprit, which very well might have a Lexus V10 perched out behind the driver. All of which gets our octane lovin’ hearts all aflutter. Also, let’s not forget about racing - serious racing. We’ll keep you posted.

Car vs. jet stunts are kind of ridiculous, but they’re entertaining nonetheless. The more exotic the hardware, the better the entertainment, and Lamborghini’s Reventón is about as exotic as it gets these days. In a made-for-TV showcase (no, we haven’t found video yet), a Lambo test driver and an Italian fighter pilot lined up one of the jet-inspired supercars and a Panavia Tornado combat plane on a 3000-meter runway to see which vehicle could accelerate faster. Long story short, while it probably made for great TV, the Lambo lost in the end. Hey, the 650-horsepower Reventón may be badder than both John Shaft and Truck Turner combined, but when matched against a fighter jet whose twin Turbo-Union RB199 engines combine to make 39,332 horsepower at sea level, it’s bound to come up a little shy. We’d take one, anyway.
